The Cross Keys, Milngavie

View of the Station Street frontage of the Cross Keys

The Cross Keys public house is on the corner of Station Road and Mugdock Road. At the turn of the century it was one of a dozen pubs in Milngavie, but competition nowadays is less fierce. Originally only the corner property was used, but the Cross Keys now also occupies two adjacent shops in Mugdock Road.

An unusual visitor in the 1960s was Charlie, the resident elephant at the Craigend Zoo in Mugdock, who used to wait in the carpark behind the pub while his keeper drank within.

An annual market used to be held at this end of Mugdock Road (formerly known as Cheapside) until about 1830; reputedly wives were among the "commodities" traded.
