The River Allander

North of Milngavie the Allander is a fast-flowing stream. Herons and dippers frequent its course both above and through the village, and kingfishers are also occasionally seen in the village.

Staney Bridge, shown below, once linked mills on the river but today is used by Milngavie residents to reach the woods and moorland to the north of the village.

Several weirs are indicative of past industrial use of the river; on the largest of these weirs slightly upstream of Gavin's Mill a fish ladder was constructed in August 1999 to enable salmon to reach their spawning ground. winter view upstream to the weir and ladder
